SOC 2 Compliance Guide: Cost, Timeline and Audit Steps

This guide is for founders whose enterprise deals stall when a buyer's security team asks for a SOC 2 report. It explains what the report is, what auditors test, what it costs and how to get from a gap assessment to a clean opinion without wasting a year.

What's in the guide

  • The five Trust Services Criteria: Security (required in every SOC 2), plus Availability, Processing Integrity, Confidentiality and Privacy
  • Type 1 (design at a point in time) vs. Type 2 (design and operation over a 3–12 month window)
  • Common Criteria CC1–CC9 and how CC1–CC5 map to the COSO 2013 internal-control framework
  • An eight-step getting-started plan, from gap assessment to external audit and annual review
  • Cost ranges: Type 1 audits, Type 2 audits for SMB and enterprise, readiness work and automation tools
  • Hidden costs: remediation, new staff, consultants, legal and contract reviews, lost productivity
  • SOC 2 vs. ISO 27001 vs. GDPR, and SOC 2+ reports that cover HIPAA, NIST and other frameworks
  • Compliance automation platforms and the CPA firms that specialize in SOC 2 audits
  • Building SOC 2 on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, and the shared-responsibility carve-out

Questions this guide answers

How much does a SOC 2 audit cost?

The guide puts a Type 1 audit at $5K–25K and a Type 2 audit at $12K–60K for smaller companies and $60K–150K+ for enterprises. With readiness work and an automation tool, first-year all-in cost typically runs $30K–150K+.

What is the difference between SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2?

Type 1 tests whether your controls are designed properly on a single date. Type 2 tests whether they actually operated over an observation window of 3–12 months; 6 months is common for a first report.

Is SOC 2 a certification?

No. A SOC 2 is an attestation report signed by a licensed CPA firm, not a certificate. Only licensed CPA firms can sign one.

Why do enterprise customers ask for SOC 2?

Per an ISC2 survey cited in the guide, 77% of organizations name SOC 2, ISO 27001 or NIST as their top supplier requirement, and 30% of breaches now involve a third party.
