Private Equity Metrics: LBO Returns, Debt and KPIs
This guide is for CEOs and founders of PE-backed companies, and for those weighing a private equity deal. It explains how a sponsor models returns and which KPIs and debt metrics they will expect you to report.

Questions this guide answers
How do private equity firms calculate returns?
Two numbers: MOIC, which is exit equity divided by entry equity, and IRR, which is MOIC raised to one over the number of years, minus one. In the guide's example, equity grows from $200M to $650M in five years, a 3.25× MOIC and roughly 27% IRR.
Where do private equity returns come from?
The guide's illustrative bridge shows revenue growth, margin expansion, multiple expansion and debt paydown. Operating levers, growth and margin, drive most of the gain. Multiple expansion is the least controllable.
What debt covenants should a PE-backed company watch?
Tests on debt levels, interest coverage and minimum liquidity. The guide also covers debt service coverage, EBITDA divided by interest plus principal, where a ratio above 1 means you can cover payments.
What is the Rule of 40 and does it affect valuation?
Revenue growth rate plus profit margin should be at least 40%. In 2026, SaaS companies that pass trade at a median 4.8× EV to revenue vs. 2.7× for those that fail, and each extra 10 points is worth about 1.0× (Aventis Advisors, May 2026).
How long do private equity firms hold a company?
The median hold at exit is now about seven years, compared with five to six years from 2010 to 2021.
