Marketplace Metrics: GMV, Take Rate and Liquidity
This guide is for founders of two-sided marketplaces who need to show whether growth is building network effects or just buying volume. It covers the metrics investors use to judge marketplace health, from unit economics on a single order to liquidity and GMV retention.
What's in the guide
- The marketplace virtuous cycle: more buyers, more sellers, better selection, more GMS
- Buyer metrics and seller metrics for scale, engagement, retention and acquisition cost
- Unit economics per order: a $100 order at a 15% take rate down to contribution margin
- User retention vs. GMV retention, and why cohort spend matters more than logins
- Liquidity measures: search-to-fill rate, sell-through rate, time to match and utilization
- FY2025 volume and take rates for Uber, Booking, Airbnb, eBay, DoorDash, Etsy, Upwork, Fiverr and others
- The viral coefficient (k factor) and critical mass and density in a network
- Best-in-class benchmarks for growth, take rate, gross margin, EBITDA and free cash flow
- Series A–C stage metrics, including GMV, take rate, AOV, churn and burn multiple
Questions this guide answers
What is a good take rate for a marketplace?
The guide's growth-stage benchmark calls 30% great, 20% good and under 10% weak. Actual FY2025 take rates range from about 10% at Instacart and Vinted to 26.9% at Uber and 34.1% at Lyft.
How do you calculate marketplace unit economics per order?
Start with the take rate on the order, then subtract payment processing, incentives, support and trust and safety, and hosting. In the guide's $100 example, $15 of revenue leaves $7 of contribution, a 47% contribution margin, with a target CAC payback under 12 months.
What is marketplace liquidity?
Liquidity is the likelihood that a listing sells or a request is filled within a reasonable time. The guide calls it the single best health signal for a marketplace and recommends tracking it by segment, not just in aggregate.
Why does GMV retention matter?
GMV retention shows how much of each monthly cohort's spend you keep over time. In the guide's illustration, doubling seller GMV retention from 25% to 50% lifts December GMV by about two-thirds.
What is the k factor for a marketplace?
The viral coefficient k is average referrals per customer times the referral conversion rate. A user who sends 5 invites with 25% converting gives k = 1.25. Above 1, each referral cycle grows the user base on its own.
